Sound and Social: Going Viral Without a Word

The Mediterrane Film Festival’s inaugural masterclass on the world of social media took place this morning – with the US-based content creator, Josh Harmon, who is famous for his musical and audio reaction videos, taking to the stage for a conversation with local journalist, Keith Demicoli.

During the masterclass with a room full of aspiring content creators and delegates, Josh provided valuable insights into his journey from a traditional media role – which saw him work for The Today Show in the US – to a full-time content creator with over 16.3 million followers across his platforms.

Josh discussed how during the pandemic, he began reconnecting with his childhood passion of playing the drums and starting uploading content of him doing so purely for fun – but following a moment of realisation one that by removing the English language from his videos and making them non-verbal, he would be able to open up his content to global audiences and give everyone the chance to enjoy his videos.

As Josh started experimenting with his content and creating impressions through music – including from popular movies and TV shows – his views snowballed. Josh explained how this generated many brand offers and opportunities for him – leading him to take up content creation full-time. He shared tips and tricks for aspiring creators to find their unique voice and keep audiences engaged, and how he uses analytics to help refine his videos and adapt them for different platforms.

Josh also touched on how to navigate and adapt to the changing algorithms and industry standards in content creation, and how he is creating guardrails for himself to manage his time and stay fresh. Josh left attendees with his only secret to creating viral content – take time to learn and test your content, but make sure it’s something you enjoy doing.
